Design consultancy Arup, in collaboration with Norwegian architectural companies Nordic Office of Architecture and Rodeo Arkitekter, has won the design competition for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation's (NRK) new headquarters at Normannsløkka in Oslo.

The project encompasses the design of 60,000m² of gross floor area and 50,000m² of utility floor area, with a focus on developing contemporary specialist spaces, including studios, publishing desks, post-production facilities, concert studios, workshops, and warehouses.

The design of the new building will feature a four-storey base that aligns with the surrounding urban scale.

Above this, a recessed, circular upper structure will provide modern workspaces with views of Oslo, reflecting NRK's brand through its distinctive form.

Arup's UK architecture team is providing support in bringing this design to fruition, aligning with NRK's vision for a future-proof workplace.

The HQ is expected to accommodate evolving media production technologies and foster cross-disciplinary collaboration among the corporation's staff.

Currently in the development phase, project construction is anticipated to begin after the receipt of formal planning consent.

NRK has set a goal to relocate to the new headquarters by 2029.

Arup director Nick Jackson said: “NRK’s investment will provide a vibrant platform for world-class media production and an outstanding workplace for future generations. The collaboration on its new headquarters reflects a shared ambition to create a flexible, future-ready media environment that fosters creativity, collaboration and innovation.

“This appointment builds on Arup’s longstanding experience delivering innovative media and cultural facilities globally, and we are pleased to continue our strong partnership with Nordic Office of Architecture, following our recent work on FK Bodø/Glimt’s new sustainable stadium.”

Recently, Arup was also appointed as the primary engineering consultant for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s Millbrae Campus Improvements project in the US.
