FLORENCE, S.C. (WBTW) — Amazon’s latest South Carolina investment will bring a 117,000-square-foot distribution center to Florence’s Pee Dee City West Industrial Park, company and local officials announced on Friday.
“With Amazon being a household name, it is an ideal fit for our area. Their investment will create jobs, diversify opportunities and expand delivery services for our residents and visitors,” Florence County Council chairman William Scofield said in a statement.
Officials didn’t immediately say when the $18 million last-mile facility is set to open or how many jobs it will bring, but hourly employees make an average of $22 an hour.
Last-mile facilities are the final stops in Amazon’s transportation network before packages are delivered to customers’ doorsteps. Employees sort packages according to delivery routes and Amazon delivery partners finish the shipping cycle by delivering goods like books, household items and toys to the customer.
Amazon earlier this month opened a 165,000-square-foot fulfillment center in North Myrtle Beach’s Palmetto Coast Indsutrial Park.
Since 2010, Amazon has created more than 6,500 full- and part-time jobs in South Carolina and invested $7.2 billion across the state, including infrastructure and compensation to Amazon employees, contributing an additional $7.4 billion to the state’s economy and helping create 7,000 indirect jobs on top of Amazon’s direct hires.
““Florence is a great place to live and work and we’re proud to be expanding our operations footprint here,” Amazon economic development manager Sam Blatt said.
