Aldi is looking to expand on-site parking at its warehouse and distribution center in Frederick by adding two new lots.
The distribution center is off Gas House Pike, adjacent to Clustered Spires Golf Club. It serves Aldi grocery stores in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, according to the company’s website.
Luke Fetcho, a project manager, spoke on behalf of the project at a Citywide Planning Department Community Outreach Meeting on Monday.
“The additional parking spaces are to offset some of the shift changes at the site because they’re under-parked at the moment,” Fetcho said.
The entire site is 70.22 acres, according to state records. The new lots would cover 105,530 square feet, or 2.42 acres, according to Monica Robyns, a planner with the city.
In total, the project is to add 246 surface parking spots between the two lots, according to city documents.
The lot currently has 266 parking spaces for cars, despite needing only 162, according to city documents.
The site has an additional 89 spots for trucks.
One lot will be at the northeast corner of the property near Gas House Pike, according to city documents.
Fetcho said the plan is to add 132 spaces with that lot.
The remaining spots will be added at a new parking lot to the rear, behind the main office building.
Fetcho said the project will add “lighting, landscaping and storm drainage improvements,” with the southern lot also adding utilities improvements.
Aldi was founded in 1961 by the Albrecht family in Germany, according to their website.
In 1976, the chain opened its first store in the United States in Iowa.
Aldi has stores in 38 states, with over 2,400 stores and over 45,000 employees, according to their website.
Serving these locations are 26 distribution centers in 20 states.
Aldi plans to open over 225 new stores in 2025, according to a press release in February.
This is part of a greater push to add 800 new stores nationwide by the end of 2028, according to a 2024 press release.
How many of those new stores will be in Maryland is unclear. A spokesperson for Aldi could not be reached by email on Thursday.
