Jul. 16—Locally-owned HHC Supply needed additional space for more building-related materials, a result of the company's contracts with state, local and federal agencies.
The store, at 3511 Gibson SE, now has that space — doubling the size of its Albuquerque location with 5,000 additional square feet in an expansion that cost roughly $325,000 and spanned seven months.
That's according to the HHC Supply Vice President Joseph Sanchez, whose family owns the company Hacienda Home Centers, which has locations in Española, Las Vegas and Albuquerque.
HHC Supply — a concept of Hacienda Home Centers in Las Vegas and Española — focuses on building materials for contractors and others, like "buying cooperatives that supply all the school systems," Sanchez said. The store initially sold hardware supply materials such as plumbing and electric products when it opened first opened, but now sells other materials such as concrete and drywall products with the added space.
The Hacienda Home Centers in Northern New Mexico are more focused on consumer-related products like lawn and garden supplies and housewares, he added.
"The primary motivation ... is just that we knew when we moved into the initial 5,000 square feet, that we needed to add some critical products to kind of complete our line," Sanchez said of the Albuquerque location, noting that local firm Jeebs & Zuzu worked as the architect on the expansion. "It's more of a pro selection of products. The idea was to also help us service Sandia National Laboratories and the city of Albuquerque, which are two of our largest customers at that location."
HHC Supply first moved into the space on Gibson Boulevard about four years ago. Hacienda Home Centers was founded in 1975 in Española, he said. Last year, Hacienda Home Centers won the New Mexico Family-Owned Small Business of the Year Award from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
With the expansion complete, the business is hosting a "Grand Reopening" on Thursday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albuquerque store. Attendees can see product demonstrations from companies such as Grainger, General Electric and Makita.
HHC Supply President Gary Sanchez said in a statement the "expansion allows us to enhance its service offerings and better meet customer demands," adding that it "also reflects our commitment to contributing to our community by providing additional employment opportunities and fostering economic development."
