Today's calendar brings several economic reports of global interest.
Chinese and European manufacturing numbers are due in the overnight session, which could affect sentiment. Mortgage applications are the first U.S. headline at 7 a.m. ET.
ADP's private-sector payrolls report for June is the first major item at 8:15 a.m. ET. Economists are looking for a gain of 220,000, up from growth of 201,000 the previous month. The Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index follows at 10 a.m. ET and is expected to come in at 53.2, compared with May's 52.8 reading.
Construction spending, due at the same time, is one month older, covering May. Forecasters anticipate a 0.3 percent increase, slower than growth of 2.2 percent in April. Crude-oil rounds out the agenda at 10:30 a.m. ET.
General Mills, Paychex, Constellation Brands, and Greenbrier announce quarterly results before the opening bell.
Thursday is very busy, with the Labor Department's key non-farm payrolls report one day early because of the market holiday Friday. European producer prices, initial jobless claims, factory orders, and natural-gas inventories are on the agenda as well.
