ADNOC Gas and its subsidiaries, in partnership with Baker Hughes, have installed Levidian's LOOP technology at the Habshan gas processing plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

This is the inaugural deployment of the British climate technology company's patented technology at an operational gas processing facility.

The technology will help extract carbon from methane, a key component of natural gas, and convert it into graphene.

Graphene has the potential to transform a wide range of industries, from boosting the performance of electric vehicle batteries and solar panels to producing stronger, more durable materials such as concrete, tyres and polymer pipes.

The LOOP unit can produce more than one tonne per annum (tpa) of graphene and 1tpa of hydrogen.

Future industrial-scale installations are projected to generate 15tpa.

ADNOC Gas chief operations officer Mohamed Al Hashemi said: "The deployment of LOOP technology is a significant milestone for ADNOC Gas. By transforming methane into valuable graphene and clean hydrogen, we are unlocking new value from natural gas, driving decarbonisation and supporting the UAE’s industrial growth and climate ambitions.

“This project reflects our dedication to shaping a more sustainable energy future while delivering tangible benefits for the industries we serve."

Data from the pilot will help refine AI modelling and digital twin development to reduce energy consumption and optimise graphene output in future LOOP unit installations.

Baker Hughes climate technology solutions senior vice-president Alessandro Bresciani said: “This project demonstrates once more how the collaboration between Baker Hughes and ADNOC Gas unlocks the potential of new decarbonisation technologies.

“Bringing innovation from start-ups and research labs into the reality of complex industrial sites requires technical skills and the highest level of collaboration and focus on health, safety and environment.

“We are delighted to have brought Levidian's technology into ADNOC Gas’ Habshan plant, as part of our company’s long-term focus in bringing to market and scaling up innovative solutions for our customers."
