Should You Be Adding Dynatrace (NYSE:DT) To Your Watchlist Today?

In This Article:

It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Dynatrace (NYSE:DT), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

Dynatrace's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Dynatrace has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. In impressive fashion, Dynatrace's EPS grew from US$0.67 to US$1.61, over the previous 12 months. It's a rarity to see 139% year-on-year growth like that.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. EBIT margins for Dynatrace remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 20% to US$1.6b. That's a real positive.

Are Dynatrace Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Owing to the size of Dynatrace, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a significant proportion of the company. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. With a whopping US$70m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. That's certainly enough to let shareholders know that management will be very focussed on long term growth.
