Since relocating to Downtown Willoughby from Mentor during the pandemic, the owners of Achilles Running Shop have had a positive business experience.
Located at 4077 Erie St., Kris Mendeszoon, owner alongside her husband, observed that the city is pro small business and building on the community.
“We love Downtown Willoughby,” she said. “I think it’s one of the best moves we’ve ever made. Everybody’s very supportive. Sometimes, you get into those bigger strip malls and areas, and there’s not the camaraderie.”
The business’s beginnings date back to 2006.

“My husband, who is a foot and ankle guy with Precision Orthopedics in Chardon, was always like, ‘They need inserts,’ ” Mendeszoon said. “Custom-made inserts aren’t always the answer and with the price of them, he was like, ‘Go get a good pair of running shoes.’ He’d send people out, they’d go to Dick’s or other places, come back and they’re like, ‘I’m getting no relief.’ So, hence that and him teaming up with our former partners, who own Second Sole in Mentor, it spun from that.”
During the time of the pandemic, the build out of the Erie Street location was completed.
“We also have one in Erie, Pennsylvania,” Mendeszoon said. “What I think people respect about our company is we take the time. We’re all in a sense trained by my manager and my husband to get the right fit for a particular person because everybody’s foot style is different.
“What we do is assess them and then we bring out recommendations for what we’re seeing, and most of the time, people go our direction, but sometimes, you have people who want color,” she added. “My feet are going to hurt, but I want the color. That’s what we stress. Fit and function before color.”
