A small number of Goldman Sachs’ top performers got the phone call of their career this morning from the bank’s CEO Lloyd Blankfein and president/COO Gary Cohn.
Blankfein and Cohen let 84 of Goldman Sachs’ (GS) employees know they were promoted to partnership managing director, one of the most storied and coveted titles on Wall Street.
“These appointments recognize some of the firm’s most senior professionals and acknowledge their commitment to our franchise, people, culture and values,” Blankfein said in a statement.
“We congratulate all those selected and look forward to their continued strong performance, contributions and leadership in the months and years ahead.”
Nineteen of the 84 partners are women, equating to 23% of the class — the highest percentage ever. Eleven of the 84 partners are millennials born in 1980 or later. That compares to just 4% of the 2014 class.
The divisional breakdown is as follows: investment banking (22), merchant banking (7), securities (26), investment management (10), research (2), GS Bank (2), and federation (15).
Goldman’s partner class is selected every two years in an intensive and secretive process. The candidates are identified in the summer and are vetted through a process called “cross-ruffing,” a term derived from the card game bridge. During this process, current partners engage in a series of lengthy conversations on whether or not that candidate deserves to be made partner. The candidates are not interviewed and they have no idea who is cross-ruffing them.
Being made partner comes with a number of perks, including an increased base salary and a portion of the bank’s bonus pool that’s divvied up among the 400-plus Goldman partners. Partners are also given access to investment opportunities not available to other employees.
