It’s official: Former Vice President Joe Biden has selected California Sen. Kamala Harris to be his running mate in the 2020 election. However, in picking his previous opponent from California — a state that has long been a Democratic stronghold — some politicos might be tutting at the chance to select someone from a state that might actually be contested in 2020. Georgia’s Stacey Abrams or Michigan’s Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, for instance, might’ve helped in winning their states that are more likely to go either way. However, that would overlook the thing second only to votes in importance in politics: money. Harris has already shown a talent for fundraising throughout her career, and she has deep roots in a state that’s long been an essential piggybank for Democrats and Republicans alike.
But what other areas are similarly crucial to financing the campaigns of candidates around the country? And which counties are the most lopsided in terms of which party they support? To help familiarize you with the landscape of the political economy in advance of 2020, GOBankingRates has broken down how political contributions are flowing to Biden and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) vs. President Donald Trump and the Republican National Committee (RNC) in each state’s most populous county. Using NPR’s Money Tracker, the study details how much money has been raised thus far by each camp, as well as how candidates fared there in 2016 — in terms of dollars and votes.
So, which counties are really the deepest shades of blue and red? Here’s a closer look at what sort of politics the people in your area support.

Population: 659,892
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $277,189
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $420.05
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $642,707
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $973.96
-
-
Jefferson County seems to be voting red with their money, donating more than double the amount of money to Trump over Biden. Interestingly, in the 2016 election, more residents in the county voted for Clinton than Trump by 7 percentage points.
Alaska
-
Anchorage Municipality
-
Population: 296,112
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $182,765
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $617.22
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $498,979
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,685.10
-
-
The huge imbalance in money donated appears to be par for the course in Anchorage. In 2016, nearly $3 out of every $4 donated to campaigns went to Trump and the RNC.
Arizona
-
Maricopa County
-
Population: 4,253,913
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $1,573,182
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $369.82
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $6,425,310
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,510.45
-
-
While Trump won in Maricopa County in 2016, the huge fundraising disparity doesn’t speak to the actual ballot numbers. Trump won with 49.1% of the vote to Clinton’s 45.7%. However, he reeled in over 80% of the fundraising dollars and is on pace for a similar figure this time around.
Arkansas
-
Pulaski County
-
Population: 393,463
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $237,333
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $603.19
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $477,578
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,213.78
-
-
The fact that Trump is bagging about double the cash Biden is speaks to how fewer wealthy donors can make a big difference. While the money would make this county look red, it went for Clinton in 2016 by nearly 20 percentage points.
California
-
Los Angeles County
-
Population: 10,098,052
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $13,345,997
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,321.64

Trump:

Total amount contributed to candidate: $13,518,278
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,338.70
-

The idea that “liberal Hollywood” is unfairly liberal takes a bit of a hit here, as slightly more dollars are being sent Trump’s way than Biden’s thus far — something that was true for Clinton in 2016, as well. So while no county in this study raised more for Biden and the DNC, no county raised more for Trump and the RNC, either.
However, it should be noted that Trump lost Los Angeles County to Clinton by nearly 50 percentage points.
Colorado
-
Denver County
-
Population: 693,417
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $1,085,865
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,565.96
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $796,290
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,148.36
-
-
Denver represents the first area in this study where Biden and the DNC raised more dough than their Republican counterparts. However, the edge is certainly smaller than one might expect given that 3 out of 4 voters pulled the lever for Clinton in 2016.
Connecticut
-
Fairfield County
-
Population: 944,348
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $2,159,918
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $2,287.21
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $1,258,228
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,332.38
-
-
Connecticut has long been a haven for New York City’s wealthy elite, and the six-figure numbers on both sides seem to reflect that. What’s more, the fact that Fairfield’s heavily skewed to Biden in terms of money raised could also speak to the nearly 60% of the county that voted for Clinton.

-
New Castle County
-
Population: 555,133

-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $538,750
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $970.49
-
-
Biden nearly triples the total from New Castle County that Trump and the RNC have produced thus far. The county is another deep-blue stronghold, with three-quarters of voters going for Clinton last time around.
Florida
-
Miami-Dade County
-
Population: 2,715,516
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $2,638,495
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $971.64
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $3,359,696
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,237.22
-
-
About two-thirds of Miami-Dade County voted for Clinton in 2016, so the fact that the money is skewed in Trump’s direction might be a surprise. But, it’s consistent with the pattern from the last cycle, when 56% of the money raised went to Trump and the RNC.
Georgia
-
Fulton County
-
Population: 1,021,902
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $1,460,718
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,429.41
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $2,490,053
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $2,436.68
-
-
Clinton fell just shy of 70% of the vote from Fulton in 2016, but the county’s money appears to be headed the other way. In addition to the major deficit for Biden this time around, about two-thirds of the money raised for the 2016 election was for the Republican cause.
Hawaii
-
Honolulu County
-
Population: 987,638
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $341,532
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $345.81
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $757,563
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $767.05
-
-
Trump might wish that the voting in Honolulu County was done with dollars, given that he’s more than doubled Biden’s total from the area thus far. But lucky for Biden, they don’t — over 60% of the county voted for Clinton in 2016.
Idaho
-
Ada County
-
Population: 446,052
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $254,508
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $570.58
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $607,429
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,361.79
-
-
Ada County went for Trump in 2016 by about 10 percentage points, so the hefty fundraising advantage isn’t hard to believe. Trump’s more than doubled Biden’s haul to this point.
Illinois
-
Cook County
-
Population: 5,223,719
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $5,870,830
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,123.88
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $2,868,680
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $549.16
-
-
Cook is the second-largest county in the country, and unlike the largest — Los Angeles County — its fundraising matches its politics. The county has sent more than double the amount to Biden than it has to Trump, while Clinton won the county in 2016 with nearly 75% of the vote.
Indiana
-
Marion County
-
Population: 944,523
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $441,314
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $467.23
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $622,563
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $659.13
-
-
Marion went heavily for Clinton in 2016, with Clinton approaching 60% of the vote. However, like now, the money was mostly red. Trump hauled in nearly 60% of the cash last time around and he appears headed for a similar win in 2020.
Iowa
-
Polk County
-
Population: 474,274
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $230,022
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $485
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $312,824
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $659.58
-
-
While Clinton managed just 52.4% of the vote in Polk in 2016, that was enough for a big margin of victory as Trump pulled in a little under 41%. However, that hasn’t prevented him from out-raising Biden in the county by a sizable margin.
Kansas
-
Johnson County
-
Population: 585,502
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $342,985
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $585.80
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $741,617
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,266.63
-
-
Johnson County was a close one at the ballot box in the last presidential election — with Trump winning there by about 2.5% of the total. The fundraising, though, tells a different story. Trump hauled in nearly 70% of the total contributions in 2016 and is en route to a similar advantage in 2020.
Kentucky
-
Jefferson County
-
Population: 767,154
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $484,141
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $631.09
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $606,279
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $790.30
-
-
Clinton didn’t perform well in Kentucky as a whole, but she did win in Jefferson County by over 13 percentage points. However, the money advantage remains with the Republican side in 2020.
Louisiana
-
East Baton Rouge Parish
-
Population: 444,094
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $224,670
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $505.91
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $743,209
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,673.54
-
-
East Baton Rouge Parish went for Clinton in 2016 by a wide margin, but the money largely went the other way with Trump grabbing over three-quarters of the total cash raised.
Maine
-
Cumberland County
-
Population: 290,944
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $473,815
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,628.54
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $213,680
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $734.44
-
-
Maine’s Cumberland County appears pretty solidly blue. Not only did over 60% of its voters go for Clinton in 2016, but she raised roughly two-thirds of the total money. And with Biden more than doubling Trump’s total thus far, it doesn’t look like this cycle offers a major change.

Montgomery County
-
Population: 1,040,133
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $5,530,325

-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $1,138,287
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,094.37
-
-
Montgomery County’s million-plus people voted solidly for Clinton in 2016, sending 3 out of 4 votes her way. And the fundraising disparity is among the largest in favor of Biden — raising five times more from the area than Trump has.
Massachusetts
-
Middlesex County
-
Population: 1,595,192
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $5,401,300
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $3,385.99
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $1,388,888
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $870.67
-
-
Clinton got nearly 80% of the total fundraising haul in 2016, and Biden appears to be on his way to a similar mark. While the county voted for Clinton by an over 2-to-1 ratio, the fundraising is still disproportionately tilted toward the DNC and its candidate.
Michigan
-
Wayne County
-
Population: 1,761,382
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $610,619
-

-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $1,353,780
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $768.59
-
-
Detroit’s Wayne County heavily supported Clinton at the ballot box, with the Democratic candidate netting over two-thirds of the vote in 2016. But that hasn’t been matched in terms of the money raised, with a 2-to-1 advantage for Trump in 2016 and now.
Minnesota
-
Hennepin County
-
Population: 1,235,478
-
Biden:
-

-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $964,741
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $780.86
-
-
Hennepin County is another of the solidly blue areas where the money and the voters are aligned and in favor of Democrats. Not only is Biden out-raising Trump here, but Clinton hammered him for votes and money in 2016.
Mississippi
-
Hinds County
-
Population: 241,774
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $72,193
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $298.60
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $134,649
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $556.92
-
-
Over 70% of Hinds County voted for Clinton in 2016, making it a clearly blue county. But, once again, the larger population of liberal voters doesn’t appear to include the county’s wealthiest residents as the fundraising benefits Trump and the RNC.
Missouri
-
St. Louis County
-
Population: 998,684
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $866,662
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $867.80
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $1,159,515
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,161.04
-
-
St. Louis County is relatively close in terms of the money raised thus far for the 2020 cycle. The county voted Democratic in 2020, but it also sent 57.2% of total contributions Trump’s way.
Montana
-
Yellowstone County
-
Population: 157,816
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $44,930
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $284.70
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $180,377
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,142.96
-
-
Yellowstone County is deep red, with over four times the money raised for Trump and the RNC as their Democratic counterparts. What’s more, Trump crushed Clinton here in 2016, winning nearly 60% of the vote.
Nebraska
-
Douglas County
-
Population: 554,992
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $187,808
-

-
-
Trump:
-

-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,423.86
-
-
Douglas County narrowly went for Clinton in 2016, with the final tally putting her ahead 47.9% to 46.5%. However, the money is heavily skewed the other way. Trump raised over 80% of the total in 2016 and appears headed for a similar trouncing of the DNC this time around.
Nevada
-
Clark County
-
Population: 2,141,574
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $1,269,283
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $592.69
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $3,703,441
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,729.31
-
-
Clark County gave a very slight majority to Clinton in 2016 that translated into a big win as Trump only managed just under 42%. But once again, this is a county where the voters are blue but the money is red — Trump managed 75% of the total money in 2016 and is crushing Biden thus far in 2020.
New Hampshire
-
Hillsborough County
-
Population: 411,087
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $189,225
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $460.30
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $389,101
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $946.52
-
-
No county in this study was closer in 2016 — Trump won 47.4% to 47.2%. However, while the number of voters might be evenly balanced, the Republicans appear to be the richer ones as Trump has nearly doubled Biden’s haul in 2020.
New Jersey
-
Bergen County
-
Population: 929,999
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $853,650
-

-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $1,067,996
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,148.38
-
-
Bergen County went for Clinton in 2016 by a wide margin, but it’s possible that employing a former governor of the state helped Trump out with his fundraising. He won the fundraising by roughly the same margin Clinton won the voting in 2016, and the numbers in 2020 appear to be more of the same.
New Mexico
-
Bernalillo County
-
Population: 677,692
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $428,174
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $631.81
-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $801,345
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,182.46
-
-
Bernalillo County saw plenty of support for third-party candidates — Clinton garnered just over half the vote while Trump cleared a third. However, Trump has nearly doubled Biden’s fundraising haul from the county.
New York
-
Kings County
-
Population: 2,600,747
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $1,893,097
-

-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $989,984
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $380.65
-
-
Kings County is as deep blue a county as there is in this study. Clinton hauled in nearly 80% of the vote in 2016, and Biden is close to doubling the fundraising in the area that Trump has managed.
North Carolina
-
Mecklenburg County
-
Population: 1,054,314
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $689,334

-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $1,489,597
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,412.86
-
-
In a county where roughly two-thirds of the electorate went for Clinton in 2016, the money is clearly flowing to Trump. But before you think Trump’s fortunes have flipped here, he had a similar advantage in money raised in 2016 in spite of getting roughly half the votes as Clinton.
North Dakota
-
Cass County
-
Population: 174,202
-
Biden:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $30,152

-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $216,754
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,244.27
-
-
While not a huge source of cash for either candidate, Cass County has been largely donating to Trump over his Democratic opponent. In addition to this lopsided total, Trump hauled in nearly 90% of the total money raised in 2016.
Ohio
-
Franklin County
-
Population: 1,275,333

-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $748,418
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $586.84
-
-
Franklin County is very close in terms of raising money, with a slight edge to Biden thus far in 2020; matching the 51.5% that Clinton pulled in for 2016. That said, the money differs from the voters once again as Clinton won over 60% of the vote in Franklin during the last cycle.
Oklahoma
-
Oklahoma County
-
Population: 782,051
-
Biden:
-

-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $1,200,995
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $1,535.70
-
-
Not only has Trump already cleared four times the fundraising total of Biden in 2020, but that appears to just be par for the course. In 2016, Trump tallied a 10 percentage-point win while hauling in over 80% of the total money raised.
Oregon
-
Multnomah County
-
Population: 798,647
-

-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $406,312
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $508.75
-
-
Most of the residents in Multnomah County appear to be staunchly Democrats. In 2016, Clinton grabbed 76% of the votes and 74.5% of the money, and Biden appears en route to a similar money win for 2020.
Pennsylvania
-
Philadelphia County
-
Population: 1,575,522
-
Biden:

-
-
Trump:
-
Total amount contributed to candidate: $347,180
-
Amount contributed per 1,000 people: $220.36
-
-
Pennsylvania as a whole might be a crucial swing state, but Philadelphia doesn’t seem to have much doubt about which way it’s going. Not only is Biden pulling in about five times what Trump is in 2020, but in 2016 Clinton grabbed 83.5% of the total cash along with 82.4% of the vote.
Rhode Island
-

Greenville is a pretty solidly red county. Trump won about 60% of the vote here in 2016, but that belies the enormous edge in fundraising then and now. In addition to this imbalanced total, Trump hauled in over 80% of the total cash in 2016.

Harris County is one of the nation’s largest, and it sends a lot more money to Trump than it has to Biden — or did to Clinton. That said, Clinton won the county by double digits in 2016, so the voters here skew a bit differently than much of the rest of the Lone Star State.

Methodology: To see who (Biden versus Trump) is coming out on top in your county in terms of cash contributions, GOBankingRates first used the 2018 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau to isolate the top five most populous counties in every state as well as all counties with a population above 1 million people. With these 253 counties isolated, GOBankingRates used NPR’s “Money Tracker: How Much Trump And Biden Have Raised In The 2020 Election” and Politico’s “2016 Presidential Election Results by State” datasets to find the following factors: (1) total dollars contributed to Biden/Democratic National Committee (DNC) by county; (2) dollars contributed to Biden/DNC per 1,000 people by county; (3) total dollars contributed to Trump/Republican National Committee (RNC) by county; (4) dollars contributed to Trump/RNC per 1,000 people by county; (5) total dollars contributed to both (Biden/DNC and Trump/RNC) by county; (6) dollars contributed to both (Biden/DNC and Trump/RNC) per 1,000 people by county; (7) percent of total dollars contributed by county to Biden/DNC; (8) percent of total dollars contributed by county to Trump/RNC; (9) percent of county that voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election; and (10) percent of county that voted for Trump in the 2016 presidential election. All financial data is up to date through June 2020 published figures to the FEC and includes campaign and party committee itemized reports.
