Trump's defense secretary nominee calls for Pentagon reform

Pete Hegseth — President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for the US Secretary of Defense — was grilled by US lawmakers in his confirmation hearing today. Key points in the hearing include his advocacy to push back against military bureaucracy. Hegseth is a former major in the US National Guard and was the executive director for Vets for Freedom and Concerned Veterans for America, along with currently being a Fox News host. Christopher Kirchhoff, founder of the Pentagon’s Silicon Valley office, joins host Josh Lipton to talk about Hegseth's potential impacts on the Pentagon. Kirchhoff, also author of Unit X: How the Pentagon and Silicon Valley Are Transforming the Future of War, explains the changes he expects to see and what it means for the Pentagon and the necessary changes for adapting to current global threats: "There is a widely agreed upon idea that the Pentagon is ripe for transformation, for very fundamental transformation... This is agreed upon in Congress, by [President-elect Trump] and his staff that's soon to be White House, and also by the leadership team [who is] appointed to lead the Pentagon." Kirchhoff says he thinks "big potential things await the new team" for what they can do to transform the Pentagon. In the video above, challenges facing the new Secretary of Defense are discussed more in depth by Kirchhoff. Also catch Kirchhoff explain the inception of the Pentagon's Silicon Valley office in an interview with Yahoo Finance from July 2024.
