India antitrust body raids Pernod, AB InBev in liquor industry crackdown, sources say

NEW DELHI (Reuters) -India's antitrust body has raided some offices of alcohol giants Pernod Ricard and Anheuser-Busch InBev as it investigates accusations of price collusion with retailers in a southern state, sources familiar with the matter said. Wednesday's surprise raids by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) targeted offices in the city of Hyderabad, and some retailers in nearby Telangana state, the five sources said, in one of the biggest such industry crackdowns in recent years.

Pernod sacks six in India's Rajasthan after internal probe on payment malpractices, sources say

France's Pernod Ricard conducted an internal investigation into alleged discounting malpractices in India's western state of Rajasthan, and has sacked at least six mid-level employees, two company sources with direct knowledge of the probe said. The alleged malpractices add to a range of compliance and regulatory challenges for the maker of Chivas Regal and Absolut Vodka, which counts India as its biggest market globally by volume sales. The Rajasthan investigation was triggered last year by a whistleblower complaint, said the two Pernod sources and a third industry executive with direct knowledge of the matter.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) -An internal investigation ordered by Pernod Ricard concluded that top executives at its India business violated the law by colluding with alcohol retailers in New Delhi, according to a document seen by Reuters, even as the French giant's representatives denied wrongdoing in court and publicly. India's financial crimes agency, the Enforcement Directorate, in Jan. 2023 accused Pernod Ricard India (PRI) of engaging in money laundering by unlawfully facilitating $24 million in corporate guarantees to help some retailers fund their license bids in exchange for stocking more Pernod brands. PRI lobbied New Delhi officials in favour of a 2021 law that allowed private retailers to run liquor shops, Reuters previously reported, in a major departure from the earlier system of the government operating such stores.

China woes drag down Pernod Ricard first quarter sales

PARIS (Reuters) -French spirits maker Pernod Ricard said it still expected to return to sales growth in the 2024/25 fiscal year, despite reporting a bigger-than-expected fall in first quarter sales, caused partly by weakness in China. Pernod, which owns Martell cognac, Mumm champagne and Absolut vodka, reported sales of 2.783 billion euros ($3.02 billion) from July to September, a like-for-like decline of 5.9% and worse than an analyst consensus for a decline of 4.8%. The drop came amid weak consumer demand in China and persistent challenges in the United States.
