India court rejects JSW Steel, Trafigura request to clear certain met coke imports

An Indian court has declined requests from JSW Steel and Trafigura to allow certain shipments of a steelmaking raw material, a court order showed, the latest setback after New Delhi's new policy curbing imports rattled the sector. India from January imposed curbs on imports of low-ash metallurgical coke, or met coke, with country-specific quotas to help domestic suppliers. The move unsettled steel majors, like ArcelorMittal Nippon India, who are concerned about the business impact and quality issues with locally produced met coke.

India's JSW to set up 0.5 million T capacity copper smelter, source says

India's steel-to-power conglomerate JSW Group plans to set up a 500,000 metric ton capacity copper smelter in the eastern state of Odisha by 2028/29 with feedstock of copper concentrate from Peru and Chile, a source directly aware of the matter told Reuters on Thursday. In January, JSW said it was foraying into the copper business with a 26-billion-rupee ($301.22 million) investment to operate two copper mines from Hindustan Copper for a period of 20 years, with the option to extend it for another decade. The group now plans to set up its own smelter facility in Odisha with an investment of around 120 billion rupees and scale up the capacity to 1 million metric tons by 2033/34, the source said, declining to be identified as details about the proposed smelter are not public.

(Reuters) -Shares of Indian steel companies rose on Wednesday, a day after a government body recommended a temporary tax on some steel products in a bid to curb cheap imports amid rising global trade tensions, raising hopes of a boost to the firms' earnings. Industry leader JSW Steel and Tata Steel rose about 3% to be among the top ten gainers on the benchmark Nifty 50 index, which advanced 0.3%. In December 2024, India launched a probe after record imports, largely from China, forced top steel mills to petition the government.

(Reuters) -India's JSW Steel reported a bigger-than-expected drop in third-quarter profit on Friday as lower prices and tepid demand continued to hurt the country's top steelmaker. (Reuters) -The Indian government is studying the request for imposing a temporary tax on China steel imports, the JSW Group chairman said on Wednesday, adding that it could get regulatory approval for the initial public offering of its cement business by January end. "We have been very patient with the steel ministry," said Sajjan Jindal, referring to the industry's requests to the government for protection against the dumping of Chinese steel in the country.
