Soitec to supply wafers to GlobalFoundries' 9SW platform

The French semiconductor manufacturer said it would provide 300mm RF-SOI wafers for GF's radio solution, 9SW, which will be used to make future 5G and Wi-Fi chips. "The transition from 5G to 5G-Advanced, and eventually 6G, requires ever-higher performance and energy efficiency, as well as increasing compactness for next-generation devices," Soitec said in a statement. Soitec said during its first-half earnings that it saw a rebound in the smartphone market lifting sales of its RF-SOI wafers, as orders have picked up from the low levels recorded in the first quarter of the year.

US finalizes $1.5 billion chips award for GlobalFoundries to expand production

The U.S. Commerce Department said Wednesday it has finalized a $1.5 billion government subsidy for GlobalFoundries to expand semiconductor production in Malta, New York and Vermont. The binding contract for New York-based GlobalFoundries, he world's third-largest contract chipmaker, finalizes a preliminary award announced in February after the company said it was investing $13 billion over the next 10 plus years in its U.S. manufacturing sites that serve automotive, smart mobile devices, Internet of Things, data centers, and aerospace and defense. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told Reuters last week the department is racing to complete as many final agreements with recipients under the $52.7 billion "Chips and Science" program created in 2022 as possible before the Biden administration ends on Jan. 20.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, GlobalFoundries and at least one other chipmaker are poised to receive their final Chips and Science Act awards from the Biden administration, two people briefed on the matter said. The U.S. Commerce Department recently notified Congress at least three companies are close to receiving a final award, one of the people briefed on the matter and another source familiar with the negotiations said. Under the Chips Act, the Commerce Secretary must notify appropriate committees at least 15 days before making any deal over $10 million.
