Big Tobacco targets Trump in hope - and fear - of change

LONDON (Reuters) -Big tobacco companies like British American Tobacco are lobbying U.S. President Donald Trump's administration to crack down on illegal vapes, including via import bans on Chinese devices, documents show and industry consultants said. Tobacco groups, including BAT and Altria, have complained that while waiting years for their own vapes or other products to get permission for sale in the U.S., some vape makers have taken substantial market share even though authorities say they are illegal to sell. BAT estimated last year that unauthorised disposable vapes account for around 70% of almost 10 billion pounds ($12.93 billion) worth of U.S. vape sales annually.

Canada court approves $23 billion settlement to end Big Tobacco lawsuits

The settlement resolves lawsuits — that have hung over Philip Morris, British American Tobacco and Japan Tobacco — that claimed the Canadian units of the three tobacco giants knew since the 1950s their products were causing cancer and other illnesses and failed to warn consumers adequately. The decision forced the Canadian units of the three cigarette makers — Imperial Tobacco Canada, JTI-Macdonald and Rothmans, Benson & Hedges (RBH) — to seek bankruptcy protection in 2019. Philip Morris' Canadian unit, RBH, was allowed to retain C$750 million from the upfront payment related to the settlement, the company said on Friday.

Such tactics have complicated U.S. efforts to stem the flow of vapes lacking authorisation into the country, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). "The FDA is aware of, and closely monitoring, instances in which companies attempt to change the labeling of illegally marketed products, or the structure of their business, to avoid detection," it said in a statement to Reuters. Chinese vape giant Heaven Gifts transferred the ongoing U.S. operations of its brand Lost Mary, whose products are not authorised in the United States, to a British Virgin Islands (BVI) firm - Wonder Ladies Limited - after the FDA banned several companies spanning China, the U.S. and South Korea from importing its flagship label Elfbar in 2023, the company told Reuters.
