Valmet has secured an order to deliver cutting-edge technology solutions for Klabin's Monte Alegre pulp and paper mill in Brazil.

As part of Klabin's ongoing modernisation efforts, Valmet will provide a new recovery boiler, an ash crystallisation plant, and an odorous gas handling system.

The order is a part of Klabin's broader investment of $1.7bn reais ($309.5m) aimed at enhancing the mill's operational efficiency and sustainability.

The new recovery boiler and ash crystallisation plant, which are expected to be operational by the end of 2026, will play a critical role in improving the efficiency, competitiveness, and sustainability of Klabin's operations at Monte Alegre.

The project further solidifies the longstanding partnership between Valmet and Klabin in pursuing sustainable industrial solutions.

“We strategically chose Valmet because of its technology, suitable interface with the recovery plants, and a good plan for implementation and assembly," said Edemilson Schroeder Pagano, general project and engineering manager, Klabin.

"The new recovery boiler and ash crystallisation system represent high-technology solutions that will give performance and optimised opex [operating expenses] for Klabin's Monte Alegre mill," added Fernando Scucuglia, pulp and energy director, Valmet South America.

The technical scope of Valmet's delivery includes several solutions.

The recovery boiler is designed with advanced process controls and high-power features, enabling it to handle 1,950 tonnes (t) of dry solids per day.

Meanwhile, the ash crystallisation plant will process 140t of ash per day, effectively removing chloride and potassium from the liquor cycle.

This process is crucial for reducing corrosion and preventing ash accumulation in the boiler, thereby ensuring long-term operational reliability.

Additionally, Valmet's delivery will include 140 Neles and Jamesbury valves, featuring advanced automation components such as ND9000 smart positioners and Axiom on/off valve controllers.

These components are integral to maintaining safety and reliability within the new recovery boiler system.

This project will be included in Valmet's orders for the third quarter of 2024.

Although the development's financial details remain undisclosed, similar orders typically exceed €100m.

The collaboration between Valmet and Klabin underscores a shared commitment to innovative and sustainable industrial practices.
