GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The Grand Junction local economy is adding one new business to its list, SURPstone.

SURPstone, short for single-use repurposed plastic stone, is a company that transforms non-recyclable plastic into material to help strengthen concrete.

Founder and co-owner Jill Layton says she is “excited to be able to do something that, I think, benefits our (Western Slope) community.”

Members of the Business Incubator Center and the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce were in attendance for the ribbon cutting.

President and CEO of the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce Candace Carnahan talked about how this business sets an example for eliminating waste in our community.

“Their goal to make an impact on responsibility of recycling and eliminating waste, even in small increments, is hugely impactful to our community.”

SURPstone started production last year and began selling its products to several Western Slope businesses last month.

“We have our stones in the True Value in Fruita, also the True Value in Orchard Mesa and New Way Refillery in Grand Junction,” said Layton.

The stones come in all shapes and designs and are used for landscaping implements like pavers, benches and pottery.
