Amazon workers in India joined a worldwide Black Friday movement on Friday demanding improved wages and working conditions from the massive online retailer.
Under the "Make Amazon Pay" campaign, about 200 New Delhi warehouse employees and delivery drivers held demonstrations reflecting activities taken globally. During one of Amazon's busiest shopping seasons, demonstrators donned masks emulating Jeff Bezos, the company's founder, and attacked its working policies.
Manish Kumar, a warehouse worker, said, "Our base income is 10,000 rupees ($120); we demand it be raised to at least 25,000 rupees ($295). "The work environment is quite pressurizing." Union leader Nitesh Das underlined that workers want the government to step in on their behalf. The Amazon India Workers Union intends to send requests to Labor Minister Mansukh Mandaviya include union recognition and environmental responsibility as well as intensify protests all around. Amazon did not comment right away on the demonstrations.
Emphasizing global discontent with Amazon's labor practices, these demonstrations line up with strikes in the United States, Germany, Japan, and Brazil. The National Human Rights Commission of India urged Amazon to investigate reports of harmful working conditions during high heat seasons in 2023; claims the firm refuted.
