10 Measures to Take When Crisis Strikes

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - August 11, 2014) - As recent global events show, trouble can erupt in many parts of the globe with little or no warning. But while vacation travelers can curtail their visits to risky or unstable regions, executives of multinational companies may not have that luxury. What measures can they take to improve their likelihood of being safe in the midst of political and social unrest?

"Having a plan ready to implement in a crisis is critical," says Eric Stewart, Operations Director at San Francisco-based STEELE Corporate Security and Advisory Services (CSS). "Each situation is unique and will require a different response depending on the specific threats faced, but advance planning will ensure that the tools are at hand to deal with many threats."

Based on a quarter century of experience protecting corporate, government and nonprofit executives, STEELE CSS has summarized its general advice in 10 Measures to Take in the Event of Social or Political Unrest, a resource guide that is available free on the firm's website. From what to assemble in a "bug-out bag" (a stash of supplies to carry the executive through the next 72 hours) to how to assess whether to stay put or move on (and where), 10 Measures provides a thorough overview of how to improve traveling executives' safety and security overseas.

"While specific recommendations will be refined or changed depending on the location where the executive is traveling, this overview will help any traveling executive think through his or her options in advance," says Mr. Stewart.

Advice includes "sanitizing" personal possessions to reduce the risk of looking like a high value target; creating a "cache" to hide important documents; ensuring access to GPS and signaling devices; packing emergency gear such as chemical lights to provide illumination and rubber doorstops to prevent unauthorized room access; and how to find a reliable communications link in the event cell phones and other telecommunications options are rendered inoperable.

"The goal when a crisis erupts is to get the executive through the next 72 hours, as that is often how long it takes for disaster relief to arrive or a riot to dissipate," says Mr. Stewart. This resource guide provides general guidelines anyone can use prior to and during an event."
