European stocks were rising Wednesday after a surprise drop in the U.K. inflation rate. U.K. inflation fell to 2.5% in December, down from 2.6% the previous month, according to Office for National Statistics figures published Wednesday. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had expected annual inflation to stay unchanged.
