Retail Stocks Gain as America Shops. Beware the ‘Silly Season.’
Shares of some of America’s largest retailers closed higher Friday as customers hit the shops, particularly those that have a big online shopping presence. The SPDR S&P Retail ETF closed 0.1% lower, and shares of companies including Ross Stores, Burlington Stores, and Dollar Tree were all in the red. Since 2010, the retail ETF has gained 0.3% on average from the market’s close before Thanksgiving, doing worse than the S&P by about 1.5 percentage points, Baker calculated.
